この名前最初にみたのが２月のノーザン トラスト オープンの時だったかなあ。

Q. How do you maintain the calm that you were able to maintain this weekend playing against all of these match play veterans and even winning three matches? And Greg, if you could think back to when you were 18, do you think you had the poise that he had?

RYO ISHIKAWA: When Greg first picked me to be on this team, I didn't know if I was worthy to be a part of this team. But when I got here and all of the players looked after me, talked to me, gave me a lot of support, and that really helped me throughout this week.

I just want to thank the captains and all of the players for all of the wonderful support and all of the help that they gave me so I could play this week.

GREG NORMAN: What was I doing when I was 18? I had about a 20 handicap, I was surfing, and I wasn't winning golf tournaments like he is, that's for sure.

I mean this in all sincerity. This gentleman sitting to my left, my immediate left, you have no idea the amount of poise he's got. He only turned 18 a month ago. And for him to be able to walk to the first tee on Thursday like he did and to never expect the reception like he expected; the first tee at The Presidents Cup, especially at Harding Park, it's a very confined space and there's a lot of things happening, people yelling, screaming, cameras going off and everything like that, it can really hit you between the forehead or hit you in the forehead. But the way he conducted himself and handled himself right from the very first moment he's walked onto the golf course and into the team room, you know, we have embraced him and he's embraced us.

And that's the spirit that we talk about with the International Team. And he's a young kid that we have all sat back and read about for months and months and months about how good he is, and playing well in Japan and winning in Japan is great, but stepping up to the plate on the big stage and getting thrown to the wolves against Tiger Woods on Thursday, and then to bounce back the way he's bounced back; there's not too many -- you've got to be in the sport to know how good that is, and you have to be a player to know how good that is.

Q. I had a question for Ryo, and Ernie, I wouldn't mind your thoughts on it, just given your experience. But being around these guys and in this format this week, did it make you any more comfortable and give you any more outlook toward playing elsewhere next year, whether that's down in Australia at the end of the year or Europe or the U.S.?

RYO ISHIKAWA: When I get back, I'm going to have eight tournaments remaining in Japan, and obviously nothing has been decided for the future, but for now, I'm going to be playing on the Tour in Japan.

Obviously having played with great players all over the world this week, I'll be looking forward to playing with them in the future and I'll be looking forward to playing in America and in foreign lands. I think playing in other countries is going to help my golf game, and obviously in the end, I would like to play on the PGA TOUR and be able to play with the guys that I played with this week, and also I want to be able to play on The Presidents Cup team next time that it comes around, and I'm looking forward to playing with everybody.

Sunday's match reports: Singles

OVERVIEW: This was an interesting pairing of the oldest player in the field at 49 against the youngest at 18. In fact, Ishikawa is younger than all three of Perry's children, including his caddy, Justin. Neither player led more than 1 up in this tight match until Perry conceded at the 17th and gave the rookie from Japan the 2-up victory. Perry drew first blood when he made a 13-footer for birdie at the fourth hole but Ishikawa squared the match with a 5-footer at No. 7. The teenager's par at the 10th hole gave him a 1-up advantage after Perry couldn't get up and down from the right greenside bunker. Perry did manage to square the match when he made a 12-footer at the drivable 13th but Ishikawa answered with a 6-footer at the par-3 14th to gain the lead he would not relinquish. Ishikawa finished his first Presidents Cup with a solid 3-2-0 record.

Q. You've played with Ishikawa now a few times, British Open, as well, just wondering what you think about his game, and if you can compare where he is at 18 to maybe where you were at that stage of your game.

TIGER WOODS: He's by far much more developed in his game than I ever was at 18 years old. I was longer than he was, but I certainly did not have the ability to hit shots like he does.

It's quite remarkable what he's done, and the poise in how he goes about it. To win, what, four times this year, on any tour, is quite remarkable. And at his age, 17 now, and now he just turned 18, it's unheard of. I don't think it's ever been done. And for him to go out there and carry himself the way he has this entire Presidents Cup; it's been fun to be a part of and watch and how he competes. I watched it at the British Open for two days, and I knew from just listening to what people have said, that he has talent; but certainly did not realize how talented he really was until you actually get a chance to play with someone.

And the way he's able to control his golf ball, the way he's able to putt and chip is far better than any 18-year-old that I've ever seen.

自分が18歳の時と比べると、彼のゴルフはとても開発されている。当時の僕は彼より飛距離はあったけれど、彼のようにショットを打つ能力は持っていなかった。彼の成し遂げてきたことはとても特筆すべきことだし、彼がそれに向き合う姿勢も素晴らしい。いかなるツアーにおいても、1年間に4勝するというのは凄いことだし、18歳になったばかりの年でそれを成し遂げたというのは他に聞いたことがない。たぶん、誰もやったことが無いと思う。

全英オープンで彼のプレーを2日間見て、周りの人が彼のことを才能あると言っているのは知っていたけど、実際一緒にプレーしてみないと、その人がどれだけの才能を持っているかは分からない。彼の、球をコントロールする能力、パットやチップショットのやり方は、僕が今まで見てきたどの18歳よりも優れている」

石川選手のインタビュー　その１
What they said: Ryo Ishikawa, Y.E. Yang

Q. What does it mean to you to win your first Presidents Cup match?

RYO ISHIKAWA: I just enjoy the week and playing with Y.E., he's a great guy.

Q. What was it like to have Ryo as a teammate?
Q.石川遼をチームメイトにするのは、どういう感じですか？

Y.E. YANG: He's young, but he definitely doesn't play young. I told him on the first tee that we should have fun and we did have fun, and we had a win, as well.
Y.E.ヤン「彼は若いけど、彼のプレーは決して若くはない。彼に1番ティで言ったのは、今日は楽しもうということで、我々はその言葉通りに楽しんだし、勝つことも出来た」。

RYO ISHIKAWA: I was really nervous today, but had nervous feelings that you get when you're about to win, so it was a great feeling.
石川遼「今日は緊張していたけど、それは勝とうと思うと強くなる。だから、とてもリラックスできました」。

Y.E. YANG: It's a very good day. I played quite well and had fun with Ryo. He's been a great teammate. I'm very happy that I could contribute to the team and I'm just going to go out and cheer for my team.
Y.E.ヤン「とても良い一日でした。今日はとても良いプレーが出来たし、遼と一緒に楽しんだ。彼は偉大なチームメイト。私はチームに貢献できて幸せだし、これから私のチームを応援しに行こうと思う」。

石川選手のインタビュー　その２

MARK WILLIAMS: Ryo, your first Presidents Cup victory with Y.E. Yang, just talk about your match today.

RYO ISHIKAWA: I'm happy with my first victory. I definitely need to thank Y.E. Yang. I think his leadership was huge, and without his leadership, I don't think we could have won today.

Q. I guess you were a little nervous yesterday playing against Tiger, very big day. Were you a little more relaxed today playing with Y.E. playing against Kenny Perry, and did that help you play better?

RYO ISHIKAWA: I definitely wasn't as nervous as I was yesterday. In a good way, I was relaxed today.

But I think Y.E. Yang gave me a lot of good advice today to relax, play your game, play your rhythm, you know, you can play slower. So I think his advice made it so I was a little more relaxed today.

Q. For Ryo, wondered if you can talk about all of the attention that you receive, obviously it appears to be pretty intense with the media following you every tournament, and I understand back home, perhaps even just going out at home, not even at the golf course, you get quite a bit of attention. Could you talk about how difficult that is to deal with, and how maybe you're getting better at it?

RYO ISHIKAWA: I've never thought that that's very difficult for me. Obviously because of the media, golf gets covered, and the popularity of golf will increase because of the media. I feel like because we play golf at a professional level, obviously the media is there covering it.

But also, I think because the media is there, golf gets noticed and I think that's an important part. And also, I would like to continue this good relationship that the media and I have, and hopefully it will be a long relationship.

Q. Two questions, one for Ryo. You have Y.E. Yang in foursomes tomorrow, so a question to you about playing with him, switching from Geoff and playing with Y.E. And to Weirsy and Tim, you've played on a few of these, and I'm not saying you haven't wanted to win the in the past, but have you noticed -- today you were down 5-1 at one point, even though the matches were relatively close, you battled back and you battled back yesterday. Is there a bit more fight or spirit this time around, do you feel, and does Greg have anything to do with that?

RYO ISHIKAWA: I think with the foursome, the alternating shots, I think the important thing is which ball you are going to use, and we have decided that we are going to use Y.E. Yang's ball, which is the TaylorMade ball, and that's what we are planning on doing tomorrow.

What I experienced the first day was that alternating hitting is really difficult, but everybody is in the same situation. And just like how we played today with good leadership from Y.E., hope to do the same tomorrow. You know, even if we are losing or winning tomorrow, as long as with Y.E.'s leadership, I think we'll be okay, and I'm hoping that Geoff will play well tomorrow, my first partner, and I think he will play well.

1番でヤンのバーディーでリード。2番で石川選手のバーディーで２ＵＰ、6番のバーディーは４ＵＰに大きくリードを広げていますよ。
9番と12番では２ＵＰまで追い上げられていますが、11番、13番ではいずれもバーディーで、再度リードを広げています。

石川選手もちゃんと勝利に貢献してますね。

　▼石川遼の話　フォアサムはリズムを取るのがすごく難しかった。ショットを打つ数が少ないので、大事な場面でいいフィーリングが出てこない。ただ、僕もジェフ（オギルビー）も、６アンド４で負けるようなプレーはしていないのに、タイガー（ウッズ）とスティーブ（ストリッカー）が強かった。きょうは米国のリズムにのまれてしまったので、あしたは自分の世界でプレーしたい。

　▼グレグ・ノーマン世界選抜主将の話　リョウ（石川）とジェフ（オギルビー）はよく戦ったと思う。しかし、相手が強すぎた。リョウは緊張していたようだが、一生懸命よくやった。最後にはとても落ち着いて、いいプレーができていたし、ジェフとのペアは成功だったと思う。

MARK WILLIAMS: Ryo, if you could give us some comments, your match against Tiger.

RYO ISHIKAWA: This format of the foursomes, it's tough, it's tough rules, but we did our best. We tried hard. Even though we finished 6 & 4, we definitely didn't play to that result.

I think the USA team just played unbelievable, and Geoff and I played our best.

Q. For Ryo, were you at all nervous playing today? This is your first time to play in an event like this.

RYO ISHIKAWA: I was really nervous, you know, and I thought about, I didn't why I was picked on this team and when I started thinking that way, I got more nervous, and up to when I hit my first tee shot. But I wanted to feel the nervous feelings that comes when you're in contention on the 17th and 18th holes.

Q. How much more comfortable will you be tomorrow in a slightly more conventional format?

RYO ISHIKAWA: I think I'll still be nervous, but I'll be able to play my own ball, be able to if I make a bad shot, I'll be the one that has to come up with the recovery shot. So I think it will be a little bit easier, but we are down one point to the USA, so if it's half a point or getting that point for our team, I want to do well and be a part of that, and then be able to speak to the captain afterwards with a victory.

ERNIE ELS: I think Adam did very well, and I think Ryo did very well, too. Just Ryo and his partner, Geoff Ogilvy, just came up against the world's best player and second best player in the world, and they had a very good day. I think they can hold their heads up high.

記事によると、米国のケニー・ペリーが４９歳。石川選手が１８歳。ケニー・ペリーが最年長ってことでしょうかね。東海クラシックの優勝や日本ツアーで今季４勝していることも紹介してますね。

RYO ISHIKAWA: It's a dream come true to be in this event, but I'm nervous at the same time. I'm going to do my best to put my efforts in to help the team win and with everyone's help, everybody is so great, and all of the other team members have been very nice to me; and I just want to have a great week and be able to contribute with them.

こっちは、ノーマンのプレーを初めてTVで観た時のこと覚えてますか？ってな感じの質問でしょうかね。

Q. Do you remember when you first watched Greg Norman play golf on television?

RYO ISHIKAWA: About ten years ago, I watched Mr. Norman play on TV, and that was probably the first time I watched and that was kind of when I started playing golf, also. So that kind of leaves an impression on my mind.

But in 2008, the British Open, even though it was in the middle of the night for us in Japan, I watched Mr. Norman play every day of the tournament.

But to have a player like him pick me into this Presidents Cup event, I'm very honored and very excited.
